Many of the men who come to see me in my practice ask how they can maintain a healthier liver. Many have seen a doctor and have had liver tests, but no problems have shown in the pathology results. And yet they suspect that their liver is playing up due to some of the symptoms they've been having. Generally these symptoms are yellow whites of the eyes, fatigue, irritability, anger, insomnia, and a feeling of being hung-over or seedy.

CASE STUDY

I remember a 36-year-old client coming to see me with very low energy levels, grey to yellow whites of his eyes and nausea. He was also very irritable. His lifestyle was very stressful. He lived on takeaway food, mainly Chinese (highly fatty food), and drank a bottle of wine a day, with a few glasses of spirits and occasionally a beer. He did not exercise and was 6 kg overweight. He was also living close to an industrial area.

When his test came back negative for any viral hepatitis, I was very surprised but explained to him that the pathology of the liver will only show extreme problems and will never show up a sluggish liver or a congested and moderately toxic liver.

I treated him with St Mary's thistle, one tablet three times a day, and included a daily carrot juice and a litre of water in his diet. I also suggested three healthy meals a day, including fish every second day, three to four vegetables in a sandwich for lunch, and steamed vegetables in the evenings with legumes, fish, chicken or lean red meat. Coffee was limited to one a day after breakfast and I suggested he drink no alcohol for six weeks. If he really craved a drink I allowed a gin and tonic in the evening.

On the second visit (four weeks later) he was feeling so much better and I introduced two vitamin B tablets a day, along with two fish oil tablets to assist the detoxification of his liver.

I saw him eight weeks later and the whites of his eyes had returned to their true white colour. His energy levels were 80 per cent better and he was pleased that he had been able to go to gym three times a week because he felt so much healthier. He has now gone tack to drinking alcohol but paces himself and continues to take one tablet of St Mary's thistle daily as a preventive for a healthier liver as well as one vitamin B and two fish oil tablets.
